Real Madrid vs. Villarreal: A Night at the Bernabéu

While in Madrid, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see Real Madrid play Villarreal at the legendary Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. We were joined by a friend from the U.S. who now lives in Spain, which made for a fun night of fútbol. But getting five tickets, and actually sitting together, turned out to be an adventure of its own.

First Challenge: Getting Tickets

Buying Real Madrid tickets is insanely difficult. Our friend had to join the official fan club six weeks in advance just to improve our chances of purchasing tickets. Even then, when tickets finally became available, he couldn’t select specific seats. We purchased five tickets and didn’t find out our seat assignments until the day of the game.

Note: These were approximately $200 euro each and way high seats, compared to our Portugal tickets bought easily same day for $80 euro and much better seats.

At first, we thought at least two seats were together. Turns out, the Bernabéu numbers seats have even numbers are on one side of the row and odd numbers are on the other. So two consecutive even and odd numbers aren’t next to each other. So, not one of our five seats was remotely close to another.

We managed to convince a single spectator to switch seats so Decklan could at least sit with one parent. Just when we thought we were settled, someone arrived and told us we were in their seats. It turned out the person who had agreed to swap with us had been sitting in the wrong row all along.

Fortunately, everyone was kind to me as we sorted things out, although we witnessed the same spectators being considerably less patient with an Asian woman who was also in the wrong seat. By halftime, we’d somehow managed to get three of us sitting together.

Before the game, Decklan was determined to get a Jude Bellingham jersey. He already owned a Mbappé jersey, so naturally he needed another Real Madrid star to add to his collection. After visiting what felt like a dozen shops around Madrid, he finally found one.

Enter Sandman + The Atmosphere

One of the biggest surprises came during the pregame festivities when the stadium blasted Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” Just like the Virginia Tech Hokies!

The Bernabéu is impressive, and the energy of the fans was even better. Spaniards take their fútbol very seriously.

They get worked up frequently, particularly when they disagree with the referees. There was plenty of yelling, whistling, and dramatic outrage throughout the match.

The Game

At one point, Vinícius (Vini!) Júnior scored, but controversy erupted over an earlier hair-pulling incident that resulted in a red card. You would have thought someone had committed murder based on the reaction from the stands! Apparently, hair pulling is a particularly controversial offense in fútbol, with penalties that can vary depending on the league.

The second half was especially entertaining, with multiple yellow cards, heated exchanges, and plenty of action.

Just like our experience at the Portugal vs. Wales match, stadium concessions were surprisingly limited. Alcohol options were only marginally better. They offered a beer with just 2% alcohol, but unfortunately, it tasted more like sweet ginger ale than beer. Hard pass.

Despite all the drama, Real Madrid came away with the win, 1–0. The winning goal was scored by Diomande from the Ivory Coast.

Getting to the train station after the match was complete nonsense. Thousands of fans were trying to leave at once, and the nearby station was chaos.

Rather than fight the crowds, we walked to another metro line and eventually found our way back.
